What is Livermore SMOKE?

SMOKE is LGSA's travel ball program.

What is travel ball?

SMOKE's travel ball teams play in competitive weekend tournaments. Some SMOKE teams only play a Summer season or a Fall season, and we may also have "A" teams that play year round.

How are the teams formed?

SMOKE holds tryouts to form its travel ball teams in the 8U, 10U, 12U and possibly older age groups.

What is the timeline?

We typically conduct tryouts in April to form the summer travel teams. These teams will start practicing immediately to prepare for the SMOKE Memorial Day Tournament. The summer teams will then play several more tournaments during June and July.

What is the tournament schedule?

The manager of each team selects the tournaments in which they intend to participate. The SMOKE teams in the various age groups usually try to coordinate their schedules to attend the same tournaments but that's not always the case. A tentative tournament schedule for each age group will be posted prior to tryouts.

Who can participate?

Players must have participated in LGSA's Spring 2017 recreational season in order to play for a SMOKE summer team. (Playing high school softball is also acceptable for 14U players.)

What are the age requirements?

SMOKE intends to form at least one team in 8U, 10U, and 12U. The age groups are

  • 8U - 8 & under - Players who are 8 years old (or younger) as of January 1, 2017
  • 10U - 10 & under - Players who are 10 years old (or younger) as of January 1, 2017
  • 12U - 12 & under - Players who are 12 years old (or younger) as of January 1, 2017

Players in LGSA's 7U division are welcome to try out for the SMOKE 8U division, and players in LGSA's 9U division are welcome to try out for the SMOKE 10U division.

What costs are involved?

With respect to finances, each SMOKE team operates independently. Expenses such as practice field rentals, tournament fees, and uniforms are split among the players. Families should also expect additional expenses for meals, lodging, etc. Teams often use fundraisers to offset some of these costs.

Where can I get more information?

We'll hold an informational meeting in April. You can also contact our travel ball coordinator:
